Go 'Eers!
I think I'd like a slice of turtle pie tonight.
[Edit]
Awesome game. I think our first quarter blowouts are a mixed blessing. When you are up 28-0 in the first quarter, it can be hard to keep up the momentum for the rest of the game! This worries me a little when it comes to more challenging opponents, especially after last season's Sugar Bowl. Hopefully they have learned, however, and future games will be like tonight's: just keeping it even for the rest of the game and you're ok.
Also, Rodriguez needs to bench guys who get personal foul calls, at least for one play. No excuse. That doesn't go for Pat White, though. I didn't like that call. Unnecessary roughness on a quarterback who's blocking?! C'mon, watch more Remember the Titans, ref!
On the positive side, Slaton is fast, but all this talk about his speed ignores something else good: Slaton is SMART. That was some of the SMARTEST running I have seen in awhile. It was beautiful! His timing is impeccable. The way he doesn't simply hesitate, but actually gauges his speed and turns according to the blocking pattern... SMART. White is no slouch either.
And the offense is playing smart overall. They're really working together, not just playing their individual roles. It's really fun to watch. It is wonderful to have Owen Schmidt working with Slaton on the carries. That lets us shake up the running game a bit, and the guy's a bull. I also think that Coach Rod is simply better and smarter than Coach Don. But my fellow fans have booed my low opinion of Nehlen for years.
I have to say, upon first glance I wasn't thrilled by our punter. Not a lot of hang time. But the more I watch, the more I appreciate his style. Maybe he can't keep the ball in the air for 20 minutes, but his placement is awesome. I'm actually starting to think that his placement of the ball 10 yards in front of the receivers is making their returns more difficult and increasing the chances of a fumble. Maybe when they move up later in the season, he'll beam one over their heads.
Boy, it's a great day to be a Mountaineer!
