He likes unicorns

I'm about to go spend the day silkscreening t-shirts with the students. I'm up early and I'm watching College Gameday on ESPN. The crew is Iowa for the big game tonight against The Ohio State U. Anyway, I was this sign in the background, and thought I should share it.

Go Dodgers!

Should I get his autograph?

Heisman candidate Ted Ginn Jr. is now my student. Should I get him to autograph a ticket stub or something before the end of the academic quarter? Feels a little weird to ask since I'm his teacher.

From the recently concluded artsAHA! festival, with Analog Arts Ensemble.

Henry Jacobs (1924) is a pioneering force in American electronic music, though his underground work has escaped the attention of the public at large. In the 1950's, he hosted world music radio shows, and began assembling tape collages. Much of his music uses comedy as its material. Henry was a gifted improviser, most notably creating background effects and dialogue for THX 1138.

The quote of the day, after seeing my really filthy apartment. "I guess you don't bring any girls back here."

I just thought you should know.

"The Return"

I uploaded a higher res version, but YouTube isn't the place to go to watch hi-def.

I just got a device that lets me watch and record TV on my computer. This seemed worthy of my first YouTube post. I like that the ball bounces off his face before he returns it for a TD. Awesome!

Also, target practice in the desert will also be coming soon to YouTube.

Go 'Eers!

I think I'd like a slice of turtle pie tonight.

[Edit]

Awesome game. I think our first quarter blowouts are a mixed blessing. When you are up 28-0 in the first quarter, it can be hard to keep up the momentum for the rest of the game! This worries me a little when it comes to more challenging opponents, especially after last season's Sugar Bowl. Hopefully they have learned, however, and future games will be like tonight's: just keeping it even for the rest of the game and you're ok.

Also, Rodriguez needs to bench guys who get personal foul calls, at least for one play. No excuse. That doesn't go for Pat White, though. I didn't like that call. Unnecessary roughness on a quarterback who's blocking?! C'mon, watch more Remember the Titans, ref!

On the positive side, Slaton is fast, but all this talk about his speed ignores something else good: Slaton is SMART. That was some of the SMARTEST running I have seen in awhile. It was beautiful! His timing is impeccable. The way he doesn't simply hesitate, but actually gauges his speed and turns according to the blocking pattern... SMART. White is no slouch either.

And the offense is playing smart overall. They're really working together, not just playing their individual roles. It's really fun to watch. It is wonderful to have Owen Schmidt working with Slaton on the carries. That lets us shake up the running game a bit, and the guy's a bull. I also think that Coach Rod is simply better and smarter than Coach Don. But my fellow fans have booed my low opinion of Nehlen for years.

I have to say, upon first glance I wasn't thrilled by our punter. Not a lot of hang time. But the more I watch, the more I appreciate his style. Maybe he can't keep the ball in the air for 20 minutes, but his placement is awesome. I'm actually starting to think that his placement of the ball 10 yards in front of the receivers is making their returns more difficult and increasing the chances of a fumble. Maybe when they move up later in the season, he'll beam one over their heads.

Boy, it's a great day to be a Mountaineer!

IT WAS OVER WHEN...

A. Game on schedule.
B. WVU reaches stadium.
C. 14-0 lead after one quarter.
D. All of the above.
Answer = D

We need a tougher schedule. OSU beat Texas for crying out loud! No way we're aiming for the championship bowl now.

Maybe we'll play Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

"Might could take a trip to the 'Ville and then back"

This is what it looks like to break your leg.

Tonight I was browsing the Louisville Cardinals website in preparation for my Nov. 2 journey to see them get whooped by the visiting team.

I have 3 observations that make me dislike Louisville more than I already did.

1. Their number of seating sections for visitors/opponents is bigger than their student sections -- 6 sections for the visitors and 4 for the students. I compare this to Mountaineer field which has 10 sections for the students and 3 sections for the visitors.

2. I copied the following from the Louisville website...
"No Throwing Footballs in Parking Lots
Throwing footballs or objects of any kind is a safety hazard to others and is prohibited in the parking lots and inside the stadium. Anyone who throws objects is liable if their actions result in damage to property or injury to others. Please DO NOT THROW OBJECTS anywhere on Papa John's Cardinal Stadium grounds."

This is ridiculous. Every football game that I've ever been to -- from high school to college to the NFL (and XFL) -- I've seen kids throwing the football before the game. I've never seen anyone injured, and if it ever bounces off someone's car, then you make fun of the person who threw the ball, you apologize and keep throwing.

3. They play at Papa John's Stadium, and I hate Papa John's pizza.

tis the season

Green is normally my favorite color, but not today.

College football has arrived. I've wasted my time reading lots of preason previews, so I could point out the best ones for you.
I've narrowed it down to two must-read articles. Both are fairly short, and both take cheap shots at Vince Young's intelligence.

Start with this preseason poll from the Onion.

Then, jump over to ESPN to read this article. If you are too lazy to read it, I've included two of the highlights below.

"1. Ohio State ... The defense is rebuilding, with All-American A.J. Hawk gone to the NFL and only two starters returning. But the coaching staff is confident the unit can continue playing at a high level with the motivation of getting some snazzy Buckeyes stickers because, as everyone knows, first-graders and Ohio State players will do almost anything for some stickers."

"5. West Virginia ... West Virginia's stock has been rising ever since the Mountaineers were crushed 35-10 by Georgia over the final 40-plus minutes of last January's Sugar Bowl. Wait … that doesn't make sense. Hmmm. Let's try this instead: West Virginia's stock has been rising ever since it upset Georgia, 38-35, at the Georgia Dome in January's Sugar Bowl. There. That's better."

Both excerpts seem like something native son would write.
