more from Monday

...here's a review of the Disney Hall concert

Tuesday, March 21, 2006

The concert last night went off. Well not entirely - the first piece, String Quartet of Terry Jennings, was even more difficult for the audience than it was for us. [coughing. snickering. cell phone at the 28'50 mark.] And it was obnoxious enough as is, as we had to deal with the whole over-blown issue of playing at Disney Hall. Anything that doesn't kill you makes you a better person right ? riiiiiiight......

I do have to admit that the Jennings quartet was a very brave programming decision for CalArts. It was never performed live, so at least for this crowd that showed up to see "In C" - it was, and is, new.

Terry Riley's "In C" however had them leaping to their feet in a standing ovation at the end - i'm pretty sure our version is over an hour long. Didn't feel like it. I kept thinking, "well I better enjoy this, because I prefer getting none of that with the music I really love playing".

Happy Birthday Bruce - I didn't realise ...

By the way did anyone fill out a bracket based on mascot match ups ?

Something Awful

Here's a fun website: http://www.somethingawful.com/. In particular, check out Dr. David Thorpe's column Your Band Sucks. Here's a link to a fun article to get you started: The Field Guide to North American Hipsters, Vol. I

Happy Birthday, Bruce!

If we were in Mo'town, WV, I'd buy you a Pimp Daddy Bruce special from Casa D'Amici. Enjoy your free chicken dinner and this website: http://www.pimpdaddy.com

Some photos from Monday night. I got off the plane from NZ , had an afternoon nap, then drove an hour to Anaheim for the game. Man that stadium is a bitch to get to, unlike my beautiful Dodger Stadium.

Four posts in a row not about sports - that's funny. Well we should change that...

I've been playing a lot of MVP Baseball 2005, charging along withteh Cleveland Indians. Below are the pictorial prove that I pitched a perfect game with Kevin Millwood. Of course, this is when I need to bump up the playing level... Rock on.

I Challenge You

I think it's a record that we had four posts in a row that weren't about sports.

Now March Madness is here, so that is about to change.
Fill out your brackets at ESPN.com. If you are the luckiest picker in the country ESPN will reward you with $10K, otherwise there is no monetary reward. You are challenged to do better than my mom, or Miranda if she chooses to participate.
The winner gets blog bragging rights.
Anyone is free to join the group, including the lurkers who randomly look at this blog and don't post any comments (including one visitor from Norway).
ESPN will let you create 5 entries, so enter away. I was going to put a two entry cap on the group, but feel free to submit all five since it's mostly luck anyway.

Here is the official message. Tell your friends.

Jon Stewart, He's my New Hero

I've been here in Auckland, sunny Auckland. The concert was last night - boy I'm glad that's over. Nothing like dealing with tonnes of music and jetlag at the same time. More later.

A New Diet Plan for You

Frankfurter!!!! Spectacular!!!!

Jen emailed me this link of Weight Watcher's Recipe cards from the 70s. At first I thought they were just strange recipes, so I quickly clicked through the first few cards. When I got to "Fluffy Mackerel Pudding" and I realized that it was something else more bizarre and hilarious than I realized. There are way too many things in jello/mold form. The food is weird, but the strange knick-knacks and props around the food are weirder.
Plus, the comments crack me up. I couldn't stop laughing when I hit Marcy's "Enchilada".
Then "It's Franktacular" almost killed me. It's hot dogs wrapped around a pineapple.

Good Job Jen!

I found this story on FARK.com. The caption under the picture reads, "DYING TO AVOID THE CENSUS: A nurse attempts to warm up Laird McGillicuddy Graeme Cairns after 12 hours of cryogenic freezing in a chilly bid to dodge responsibility for filling out his census forms." Here's the link. Silly Kiwis!

A Shout-Out to the Ladies

I'm rooting for two Mountaineer teams to dance this year. Good Luck!

In case you missed it, the 12-15 Mountaineers were the final team to qualify for the Big East women's basketball tournament. They've upset 3 teams on their way to the Championship game. Tonight they face UConn in Hartford, but hopefully the crowd will be rooting for the underdog. This game should be more exciting than American Idol. I'll be watching tonight.
So, why not West Virginia?

Taiwan Over China

Even though they were coached by a former Dodger, Jim Lefebvre, I'm most glad that we annihilated the Chinese baseball team last night 12-2.

Don't Fuck with Taiwan

Go back to China

"I believe in the Church of Baseball"

It took be 90 minutes of waiting for my browser to refresh in the Cardinals Virtual Waiting Room, but I got tickets to see the Cardinals play in their new stadium. If they weren't playing in a new ballpark I wouldn't have went through the trouble. I got one $40 ticket to see the Cubs play on April 23, (A ticket that would cost half that at Dodger Stadium.) and 2 standing room only tickets to see the amazing KC Royals play on June 30. For the price of my two standing room only tickets, I could have bought 4 seats at Dodger Stadium. Since the Cardinals ticket prices are probably closer to the national average, maybe it's not so bad that the Cardinals are charging me $16 just to stand inside the stadium; maybe the Dodgers are just that great.
Anyway, I'm glad that baseball is back.
